The Green Revolution has been an exercise in creating extremes. We now have extreme uniformity in our staple crops and in our agricultural practices, with an extreme dependence on agrichemicals, and a globalised crop market (you can't get much bigger than that).
This has led to an extreme reduction in our crop gene pool, unstoppable pest problems, and a problem-solving mind-set limited to more-of-the-same single high-tech solutions to 'key' difficulties.
We now have food from crops which have been intensively bred for extreme yield with scant attention to whole nutritional value, taste or pest resistance.
In this one-size-fits-all agricultural system, the answer to poor soil is to add chemicals, and the answer to pests is to kill them with chemicals.

A long running-debate
about the sustainability of 'Bt' insecticide-generating GM crops is
that because they kill their single most troublesome pest, no
broad-spectrum chemicals are applied and other pests will “go
crazy”.
The story of Bt cotton in
China supports this concern. More than 90% of Chinese cotton is now
genetically transformed to control corn boll-worm (CBW). “Spraying
specifically for CBW from 1997 when Bt cotton was introduced until
2010 decreased by a spectacular two-thirds. Total sprayings for all
insect pests during this period was reduced by a less spectacular
14%. Spraying for non-CBW pests increased
by 60%.”

A collaboration of Swiss,
British and American scientists have been investigating why increased
pest problems are emerging in GM cotton crops designed to kill
pests.
After the tortuous logic
we've been following in examples of commercial research published as
'science' (see TURNING A GM YIELD LOSS INTO A GAIN and MORE MAYBE GM YIELD GAINS - April 2013), here's some refreshing real science.
One of
the most commonly used GM cotton varieties is Bollgard II which has
two insecticide-producing 'Bt' genes. The genes work in tandem to
deal with cotton's most common pests, the cotton boll-worm, bud-worm
and army-worm.
In
fields where the boll-worm is being controlled by a Bt
crop, a range of other
troublesome pests are appearing, such as aphids, leafhoppers, mirid
bugs, and stink bugs.

China is one of the world's largest
producers of cotton. In the six major cotton-growing provinces
there, more than 90% of the crops are now 'Bt' insecticidal GM
strains designed to kill cotton boll worm (CBW). Scientists in the
country have been especially diligent in collecting data to see how
the GM cotton is interacting with its environment.

Over the years, several Chinese studies
have been published, most of which found very little positive to say
about Bt cotton. However, the latest one has finally managed to
extract 'good news': just what the media and biotech industry have
been waiting for.

If you've already read about GM WHEAT IN THE UK (July 2011) or GM WHEAT IN AUSTRALIA (August 2011), you'll have realised that neither of these GM varieties are necessary: natural aphid-resistant wheat strains already exist but have been by-passed in favour of GM (patentable) versions; roughage in the diet is plentiful if you eat the right things and its presence alone does not prevent cancer, but dietary issues have been by-passed in favour of GM (patentable) versions.
The notion that GM is simpler, quicker and more certain than conventional crop development should finally be laid to rest by the news of the release of the latest conventionally-bred wheat variety. This could and should revolutionise wheat production across Central Asia, the Middle East and North Africa.

Strangely however, the message never seems to have reached biotech scientists, nor their funders. The development of GM wheat has continued behind lab doors regardless of public or commercial desires. At least two strains of a novel wheat are now ready for field testing in the UK.
The Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has received an application from Rothamsted Research to carry out a two-year field trial of aphid-resistant GM wheat, to run during 2012 and 2013.
